Counselor’s Corner – Megan Batson

What are optionals?

As a yearly staple of SCATS, optionals are my favorite part of camp! Optionals are counselor-led activities that change every night, including athletic, artistic, and silly events alike. Every evening after dinner, campers make their way back up the hill for optionals around the building. Although the stormy weather interrupted our usual active optionals, kids could pick between friendship bracelet making, yoga, origami, letter writing, improv, and games in the den. With the forecast improving, we’re excited to bring our activities back outside with volleyball and capture the flag! Before lights out, I tend to ask my campers what they’re looking forward to the next day, and so far optionals have been a consistent winner. Many of my campers are already plotting to attend volleyball in order to prepare for the SCATS Olympics coming this Saturday (go Tuvalu)!

On the planning side of things, counselors try to balance our range of optionals along with switching them out every day, offering a variety for kids to try something new and make new connections. Kids who may not be in each others’ halls or classes can play games together or learn more about their interests, which I like to take into account when planning them. We can’t wait for the rest of this week’s activities, and I can’t wait to share more with you all!
