The day we’ve all been waiting for has finally arrived, and VAMPY 2019 is now underway! Everything started yesterday when the campers moved into their dorms and began settling in. The halls echoed with laughter and a few squeals as returning campers reunited with their friends, and new campers were all smiles as they joined in with the rest. By the end of dinner, it was clear that new and old campers alike were quickly forming bonds and getting even more excited for the three weeks to come.
After dinner and a brief orientation by Dr. Roberts, campers joined counselors on the FAC lawn for icebreakers. We played some easy get-to-know-you games like tossing around a beach ball with questions on it. We also introduced campers to some more advanced icebreakers such as untangling a human knot, organizing themselves by birthday without talking, and Pterodactyl, a traditional VAMPY game in which campers call the name of this prehistoric creature without showing their teeth or laughing; it’s a lot harder than it sounds.
After the ice was thoroughly broken, we headed back to the halls for some more relaxed bonding before bed. We played cards, ate snacks, and talked with anticipation about what the first full day of camp had in store. Judging by the way the first day went, VAMPY 2019 will not disappoint.
