Gifted Education Month kicked off with a ceremony at the Kentucky State Capitol February 4. Several state representatives, senators and distinguished students spoke to a crowd of nearly 300 students, educators and advocates gathered in the Capitol rotunda. The ceremony concluded with a proclamation read on behalf of Governor Steve Beshear by his Executive Assistant, Colmon Elridge, who also spoke about his own experiences as a gifted student. After the ceremony, many students met with legislators and were recognized at the start of the day’s session in the House of Representatives and Senate chambers. The day was organized by the Kentucky Association for Gifted Education (KAGE). In the past, Kentucky held an annual gifted education week. This year is the first that the entire month of February has been designated to celebrate and advocate for gifted education.
