Counselor’s Corner: A Recap of Saturday

kristenSaturday at SCATS 2014 included great feats of strength, endurance, and the ability to improvise on stage in front of more than 100 other campers.

Saturday morning began as it should have – the students were sleeping in with options to watch cartoons or get breakfast on the lawn. However, after lunch, the relaxing environment grew fierce with competition and team spirit as the campers were separated into countries for the SCATS Olympics. My girls and Wade Vierheller’s boys matched up to take on the Olympics as Japan. With face paint on and thunderous cheers, we took on the dodgeball tournament, a tug-of-war matchup, a relay race, and a few rounds of trivia. Though Canada came out on top, it was amazing to see all the kids interact and be so encouraging of one another, regardless of their “home country” for the day.

After the Olympics, we had some hall time to relax and go over the day, but soon after, it was dinner time. After some pizza and ice cream to amp up the energy, everyone headed to Grise Hall to perform the tradition of Paper Theater. For those of you who don’t know, the campers are randomly sorted into 7 groups. They get to draw a traditional fairy tale out of a hat, but what makes this night so enjoyable is the twist they have to put on it. For example, this year included a Southern Snow White, and the favorite “SCATS style” Princess and the Pea.

It was a busy day Saturday but we got to see many campers step out of their shell and make some great new friends, as well as strengthen the relationships some of them have made in past years. We’re gearing up for Week 2 now, and I know it’ll be a great one!
