Teacher’s Talk: Presidential Politics (July 8 & 9)

Yesterday, Presidential Politics had a great trip with the World Biography Class to Springfield, Illinois to visit President Lincoln’s museum and tombstone.  We left at 3:00 in the morning & arrived back at the dorm around 9:30 last night.  We spent over 3 hours at the museum and 30 minutes at the cemetery.  We stopped at McDonald’s for breakfast, Subway for lunch & Wendy’s or Pizza Hut for supper.  We had a lot of fun and learned a lot about President Lincoln.

Needless to say students were very tired this morning but they managed to pick up by the end of the day.  Today in class we studied the presidency of Bill Clinton by discussing the major events & issues of his time in office.  We also got to see a great debate between the Guthrie brothers as they battled each other during the 1996 election between Bill Clinton & Bob Dole.  After lunch students went to the library to research some court cases during the Clinton years in addition to a topic of their choosing that happened during his presidency.  Students also worked on researching their Study Hall Project over their version of Mount Rushmore.  During the last part of class, students were assigned political parties based on their score from a political survey they took last week.  Students then picked their presidential nominee & started on their party’s platform over a variety of domestic, social, economic & foreign policy issues.  The students will perform this last debate on Friday as we conclude the class.

Tomorrow the students will study the presidency of George W. Bush, the 2000 & 2004 Presidential Elections, several court cases during the early 21st century, finish their Study Hall Project and their party’s platform for Friday’s debate.  We will also have the quarterfinal round of our Presidential Face-Off Tournament.
