Counselor’s Corner: Mario Hernandez

Mario Hernandez

On our first full day of Camp Discover, campers left their 4th and final class to return to Florence Schneider Hall to meet with their counselors before the rest of the day began. A large rain cloud shook things up as they left class, but their preparedness with umbrellas saved a few of them from getting wet, but an unlucky few had no choice but to get drenched head to toe. Campers ran to meet their similarly soaked counselors in the lobby of the dormitory so they could change into some fresh clothes.
The trek to dinner was thankfully dry, as was the walk to the next activity where Head Counselor Evie spoke to the kids about the college application process and what the college experience could look like for all the campers in a few years. Campers spoke about their dream colleges with some big goals such as UCLA, Harvard, and even Western Kentucky University. Once Head Counselor Evie wrapped up, the kids were released into their daily activities referred to as Optionals. The campers had a choice between 8 fun Optionals that everyone was eager to sign up for.
Counselors Corey and Noah led an expedition into the rained-on outdoors for a bit of relaxing Puddle Splashing. Other campers chose to explore the tech world with an Optional where Coding and Electrical circuits were taught by Counselors Addie and Emma Grace. The kids were able to make light up greeting cards with their circuit kits and programmed Sphero robots with easy to learn coding skills.
Counselors Breanna and Kaylee led a Reading time optional where kids brought their favorite book and took some time to wind down after a long day of fun. The other Optionals allowed kids to play games such as Jeopardy with Counselors Jack and Braccen; along with Counselors Finn and Mario letting the kids solve the New York Times Word Games and other online puzzles in a fast-paced manner with their teamwork skills. Campers also had the choice to play card games with Counselors Cameron and Jackson, or to learn to make friendship bracelets (a longtime camp tradition) for their peers with Counselors Anna and Evie.
After a long day, campers returned to their dorms to sleep and get ready for the next day of learning and fun!
