President Andrew Jackson pays a visit to Presidential Politics

logoTuesday morning students examined a current events article and discussed what Hillary Clinton’s campaign strategy should be in the upcoming election. We then switched gears and watched some of the best campaign commercials during the 1988 election between George H.W. Bush and Michael Dukakis. Students watched political satire in the impersonations that were done on Saturday Night Live of the Bush years from 1989 to 1992.

Students read in their book about the children of George H.W. Bush. We read a current events article over political dynasties in the United States. Students discussed whether or not a family name would influence their vote in an upcoming election.

After our morning break, students then watched the Saturday Night Live version of the 1988 debate and a short clip over the Bush presidency from 1989 to 1992. Students were then put into two political parties to make posters for their candidate in the 1988 debate. We then watched Grace and Abraham perform as Michael Dukakis and George H.W. Bush during their recreation of the 1988 presidential debate.

After lunch, students watched part of the actual debate between Bush and Dukakis during the 1988 election. Students went to the library where they researched a variety of topics that dealt with the George H.W. Bush presidency. Students researched some of the major domestic and foreign policy decisions that impacted the Bush years. Students researched three of the major court cases that the Supreme Court gave decisions on during their Monday session regarding the death penalty, the power of the EPA, and the controversy surrounding Arizona’s redistricting plan. We then came back and evaluated how historians have judged ten different categories concerning the Andrew Jackson presidency.

After students came back from their afternoon break, we were paid a visit by President Andrew Jackson! Before he left, the class took a group selfie with Andrew Jackson and his first vice president, John Calhoun. Students ended class by taking an assessment over the presidency of Andrew Jackson, and the presidencies from Richard Nixon through Ronald Reagan.

Last night during study hall, students discussed and analyzed some of the major court decisions during the presidency of George H.W. Bush. Today students will visit the Hermitage in Nashville to see the homestead of Andrew Jackson!
