Optionals Spotlight: Patriotism 101

jonToday marked the first game of the 2014 World Cup for the United States Men’s National Team. The game was actually played earlier in the evening, but that didn’t stop some of the students for signing up to watch the replay of the game. Starting off with standing in a line just as the team did, the students participated in the playing of the National Anthem. The action was quick to start as the USA scored their quickest goal in World Cup history with a score 32 seconds into the game! As the counselors knew the outcome of the game (unlike the campers), we skipped ahead to the 75th minute to finish out the game. When Ghana scored the tying goal, the energy was changed in the room, but a short few minutes later, the energy was reinvigorated with the USA’s game-winning header. If you’d like to check out highlights of the match, you can view them at this link: http://www.espnfc.com/fifa-world-cup/story/1887752/jurgen-klinsmann-praises-us-for-fighting-to-the-last-second  To end the event, the students in the optional and those who had migrated to the room for community time sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” to celebrate the USA’s first (and hopefully not last) 2014 World Cup victory.  Go USMNT!
