Counselor’s Corner: Back to Class

mattYesterday the campers went back to class after their weekend break. They had mixed feelings because they loved the content of their classes but they did not get to spend as much time together as they did on the weekend.

Last night, we strayed from the normal evening activities when the campers who had permission to be involved with Dr. Julia Roberts’ study about why gifted kids strive to be gifted and work hard went to their meeting. After they had taken the survey, the entire group of campers were introduced to the Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky.  This is a residential high school on WKU’s campus designed for juniors and seniors in high school who are interested in math and science at higher levels. The presentation informed the students of the opportunities the  Gatton Academy offers,  such as study abroad, lab hours, college credit, and an accepting community. This year’s group of counselors has a handful of Gatton Academy Alumni that shared some of their stories last night as well. Afterwards, a little counselor trickery ensued with the naming of two CTFs (Capture the Flag and Creating the Friendship) as optionals.  These optionals encouraged kids to get out of their comfort zone and do some activities they may not have tried for themselves.

Overall, we had a great day back to classes and I hope that this week and SCATS finishes as well as it has been for the first week!
