Teacher’s Talk: Presidential Politics (July 11)

It is hard to believe we only have one more day!  Today students participated in several debates including a group debate in which the class was divided into Democrats & Republicans discussing the key issues of the 2008 presidential election.  We also finished our quarterfinal matchup of the Presidential Face-Off Tournament.  Students also watched several Saturday Night Live skits involving the 2004, 2008, & 2012 presidential debates.  Students then researched the presidency of Barack Obama in addition to discussing the politics of his administration.  At the end of the day all the students participated in the first four games of the Presidential Hall of Shame Tournament that was quite funny as each team had to hand out more compliments to the other team as to why their opponent’s president had a better legacy than their president.

There is no study hall tonight as the students will attend the Talent Show.  Students will turn in their Mount Rushmore project tomorrow in addition to taking their final assessment.  We will also have our final rounds of each of the Presidential Hall of Fame & Presidential Hall of Shame Tournaments.  The students will then get to see two students make their case for why Barack Obama or Mitt Romney would have made the better choice in 2012.  We will then conclude our class tomorrow with a fictional debate between the three political parties the students are in that will take place in the year 2040 and our traditional wearing of the Presidential Masks to another classroom!
