The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science offers bright and highly motivated high school juniors and seniors in Kentucky a chance to start college while finishing high school at Western Kentucky University. Attending SCATS and VAMPY gives students a great opportunity to see what it’d be like to attend as Florence Schneider Hall is home to Gatton students when school is in session!
As a two-year residential STEM program allows, Gatton Academy provides students opportunities to participate in college coursework full-time, pursue faculty-mentored research, study abroad, and thrive in a supportive community. Students explore research in STEM and non-STEM fields from as short as a semester to their entire time at Gatton. That research is then submitted to conferences locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally for students to present their findings!
Some of the best memories students make while at Gatton happens during summer or winter break. With school not in session, we use this opportunity to explore England and Costa Rica. Gatton students can spend 3 weeks in England studying British Literature the summer between their junior and senior years or spend 2 weeks in Costa Rica studying the biodiversity of the country’s landscape.
How much does an opportunity like this cost? Thanks to funding provided by the state legislature, every Gatton Academy student receives a $46,000 scholarship covering the cost of tuition, housing, and an unlimited meal plan. The program is designed to be accessible to ANYONE in the state of Kentucky should they be accepted.
Interested students apply online between August 1 and February 1 of their sophomore year of high school. If you’d like to learn more about our program in the meantime, come visit us! We have opportunities a few Saturdays each year for families to learn what we’re all about and have all their questions asked. (These dates will be published by August 1 at www.wku.edu/academy.)
