Ancient Greece is being brought back to life by SCATS campers this summer. They started last week becoming familiar with the Greek gods and goddesses, learning about their family relationships, what they could do, and what realm they were responsible for. They went on to read some Greek myths. Through the stories they learned how the gods intervened, or interfered, in the lives of humans.  Â
They spent some time learning about life in Ancient Greece. One focus was the original Olympics. The students formed groups, gave their team a name, and competed in a mini-Olympics. Events included the shotput, discus, handboxing, ball balancing, and weightlifting. Not all the scores were in, but it looked like Team Bacon Greece was in the lead!Â
As a final project, the students made dioramas illustrating Greek myths. They were working hard so that their dioramas showed as much of the story as possible. One student chose the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. They had managed to create a two-level diorama that showed Orpheus’s journey to the Underworld. Another student chose the King Midas story. He was doing an excellent job bringing to life the part of the story when Midas turns everything he touches to gold. There were many other dioramas showing myths, but what they really showed was how much the campers have learned.Â
