Counselor’s Corner – Kayla White

Movie Night

On Sunday night, our SCATS campers gathered in the Great Hall for a movie night. They gathered their pillows and blankets and settled down for a showing of Out of My Mind. This was an opportunity for campers to wind down after a busy weekend and relax before their second week of camp started.

The movie follows Melody, a young girl with cerebral palsy, as she entered sixth grade, searching for her voice and place among her peers. Out of My Mind showed SCATS campers what it meant to persevere, and demonstrated the power of understanding and inclusion.

Throughout the movie, campers laughed, cried, and broke into multiple rounds of applause in reaction to Melody’s story. They celebrated her tenacity and strength as she stood up to her bullies and those that were prejudiced against her. As counselors, it was heartwarming to know that kids resonated so much with the message of the film.

Out of My Mind is a movie that gifted kids can connect with deeply, even if they don’t share the exact same experiences. They can see that, especially in gifted spaces, everyone can be brilliant when given the right resources.
