The Summer Camp for Academically Talented Middle School Students, better known as SCATS, has officially kicked off! With suitcases, bags, and other belongings in tow, close to 120 students and families converged on Western Kentucky University’s campus Sunday afternoon.
Students came from across Kentucky and Tennessee and as far away as Tacoma, Washington. Some campers were returning a second or third year while others were participating for the first-time. Regardless, all were eager to meet their residential counselors, or RCs, and get their room assignments.
After unloading and meeting their individual counselors, everyone headed to the student union for dinner. The first night is all about meeting new friends, having fun, and getting oriented to camp. Counselors begin the evening by sharing a bit about themselves and then the rest of the evening was fun and games to help students break the ice and feel welcome at camp.
Students were excited about their class schedules when they arrived. With four classes per day, there are many excellent choices! Campers will be exploring history through Pop Culture, Nazi Germany, and Ancient Greece, as well as diving into STEM with Chemistry, Rocket Science, Problem Solving, Crime Scene Investigation, and Math in Game Shows. There are also a lot of humanities topics such as Art, Monologues, Acting, Sci Fi, and Music. There is enough variety for every interest.
Camp is off to a great start! We can’t wait to share daily updates.
