Counselor’s Corner: Jack Clark

As we wrapped up the first week of VAMPY, we headed into an extremely exciting weekend full of fun and engaging activities for all of the campers. On Saturday, the campers had a little bit of extra time to sleep in before heading out to get some delicious donuts for breakfast. After filling up for the day, we went out to the colonnades for one of the most popular VAMPY traditions, the VAMPY Olympics!

The VAMPY Olympics is a day long event full of games and friendly competition in activities such as dodgeball, musical chairs, storytelling, and tug of war. The campers compete as representatives of countries decided by the counselors, and this year we had a great cast of countries such as the United States of America, Mexico, Australia, and my personal favorite, the fictional country of Genovia. The campers accumulate points throughout the day until one country comes out on top, winning a trophy, and of course, bragging rights. This year our champion country was Mexico, headed by counselors Mario and Cassie.

After a long, but fun day on Saturday, the campers had time to wind down and reset with a more relaxing Sunday schedule. The main event on Sunday was Varnival, or the VAMPY Carnival. The campers had the opportunity to explore activities all around the building such as face paint, dodgeball, 4-square, renaissance art, and meditation. Varnival is always one of my favorite days at VAMPY because the relationships that the campers have built with their peers is on full display during this large community event and it is a fun time for campers and counselors alike. The campers wrapped up the day with a trip to study hall to get back in gear for a full week of fun and interesting classes.

I can’t wait to see the community that the campers have built grow and expand in the next two weeks and I know that every camper will have a plethora of fun stories to share back at home. Here’s to a great rest of camp!
