Russian Class Opens Doors to a New Culture

Students have been studying a different language, culture, and art in the Russian class with Ekaterina Myakshina. As we near the end of camp, any observer can see their development in the Russian language. Class began with Ekaterina Myakshina greeting them in Russian and the class responded back in Russian. They knew what to do as they paired off and had mini conversations with their partner starting with a greeting and a short discussion about each other’s family and profession, all in Russian. Throughout the two-week camp, they traveled virtually to different regions of Russia, learning about the culture of the region and how to play common games from the country such as “Loto” which is similar to the American game BINGO.

The last couple of days at camp were spent painting one of the most famous artifacts from Russia –the nesting dolls, known as matryoshka.Campers selected beautiful colors as they painted their nesting dolls. Myakshina gave a few starter ideas for their dolls and the students put their creativity caps on and ran with it. Rebecca C. said she was making characters from a show she watches, another camper was painting a penguin family, and yet another was painting Disney characters. When asked what she was learning in the class, Arianna said, “I liked learning about the various regions of Russia.” One thing is certain, students were able to discover Russia’s rich culture with beautiful art, language, and stories to share.
