Counselor’s Corner: Cortney Stewart

Cortney SThe first Saturday of VAMPY was a very busy day for everyone. It started out slow with breakfast and some down time at the dorms, but after lunch, the Olympics kicked off! For the VAMPY Olympics, a girl counselor group was paired with a guy counselor group to form a team that would represent a specific country. For example, mine and Gabe’s groups were Russia. Other countries included Germany, the United States, and the United Kingdom. There were 10 total teams which made for some stiff competition. The campers competed in three big team events: dodgeball, trivia, and a relay race. Other individual events were there for those who wanted them as well. Arts and crafts, tug of war, and a mock javelin and shot-put throw (using pool noodles and grapefruits) were just a few of the other options.

All of these things helped earn points for the teams. In the end, it was a close competition. Team Albania won the trivia competition by just two points. But the United Kingdom, led by counselors Jon and Dixa, came out victorious. They earned the most points and won the overall gold for VAMPY Olympics. This is the second win of the summer for these counselors who also won the SCATS Olympics a couple of weeks ago.

After dinner, we participated in another one of our VAMPY traditions- Paper Theater. Each of the 12 groups was provided with a fairytale to act out- with a twist. One group had Jack and the Beanstalk Rocker style, another presented their take on Sleeping Beauty Zombie style, and our last group was, of course, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Vampy style. Or as we like to call it, Dr. Julia and the Seven Counselors. All of the campers made their costumes and props out of newspaper and masking tape, then proceeded to make us all laugh out loud with their funny skits. After the heat of the day, it was nice to relax together in the nice cool auditorium.

While the day was busy, it was also one of the most fun days that I’ve had so far at VAMPY and I think all of the campers would agree with me. I know I can’t wait to see what other fun things we get to do in the next two weeks, because it’s only going to get better.
