Psychology at VAMPY

Observing behaviors at the zoo (Do you see what I see?)

The VAMPY psychology class provides each camper with the opportunity to take a deep dive into human behavior and the mental processes that influence how humans develop and interact with the world. Our students have explored major psychological topics such as neuroscience, memory, learning, abnormal behavior, and many others as they tackle class with energy, excitement, and joy every day.

As a part of their VAMPY experience our psychologist in training got the opportunity to visit the Nashville Zoo! This trip gave them the opportunity to observe behaviors of both animals and people alike. Each camper displayed their ability to apply what they had learned during their time in the classroom. The entire day was full of conversations about conditioning, reinforcement schedules, parenting styles, and learned helplessness. Not only was this a very informative trip but an incredibly fun one too, and a great example of how the campers have grown closer together through their shared love of learning more about people.

It has been amazing getting the chance to see how each camper has grown over these three weeks. On an individual and group scale these kids have blown expectations out of the water. VAMPY is great because it encourages each camper to push their own boundaries while also creating lasting bonds along the way.
