DNA & Genetics: Utilize the tools of professionals

DNA and Genetics students are learning the ins and outs of genetic material and how it is the source of function for all living things. Students begin each day with a whiteboard review session then jump straight into a lecture. So far, they have learned about DNA structure, proteins and their many functions, DNA replication, mitosis and meiosis, biological statistics, and various lab techniques. 

Students are provided with a positive learning environment where curiosity is encouraged. DNA and Genetics student, Sophie, notes, “I get to be a nerd in class, which is great, and I don’t feel nervous about answering questions.” 

After the morning lecture, students apply their knowledge in the lab. They perform genetic experiments using techniques like PCR and gel electrophoresis, which professional scientists also utilize. Most excitingly, students tested their own blood types and grew and edited the genes of E. coli bacteria so that they would glow in the dark! 

In addition to simply learning about genetics, students have also learned how to be ethical bearers of genetic knowledge. They were exposed to how eugenics was used as a weapon of genocide in World War II, the effects genetic testing has on athletes, and the disproportionate genetic testing demands for people of color. As students apply their knowledge beyond this course, they will know that their decisions when utilizing genetics have major consequences. They will also be able to educate others regarding how genetics can be used ethically and inclusively to improve lives. 

As the end of VAMPY approaches, students will spend their last week focusing on biotechnology. This means a lot of lab time using PCR, gel electrophoresis, and genetic editing. Students have displayed much enthusiasm while in the lab by not only diligently paying attention to what knowledge they should take from the labs, but also being meticulous in their lab safety procedures.
