Campers welcomed to VAMPY!
Campers welcomed to VAMPYÂ
Encouraging words, warm hugs, and big smiles graced Florence Schneider Hall as more than a hundred families moved their campers in for the Summer Program for Verbally and Mathematically Precocious Youth, better known as VAMPY. Several campers reunited with old friends they’ve met at previous camps, and many met new friends and roommates for the first time. Regardless of whether it is a first year or a fifth year, students were eager to get their rooms set up and begin their three weeks with friends, counselors, teachers, and staff.
During check-in, parents were invited to a meeting with Dr. Julia Roberts, Executive Director of The Center for Gifted Studies, who has been leading the camp for over four decades. Roberts always puts parents at ease and gives them a summary of what their children will be doing for the next three weeks. As she pointed out, students will not be lacking in activities or food. She described the fresh food court that has many food options, even for the pickiest kid! When not in class, they will be participating in a wide range of activities that bring them together as a community.
The first night is all about getting acquainted with each other and their counselors. The residential counselors—many who attended camp themselves when they were younger– create the bulk of the activities in the evenings and on the weekends. Campers learn where counselors are attending college, what they are majoring in, and what their future plans may be.
First day went smoothly and was a huge success! We appreciate all the families who gave words of encouragement and support to get them to day one!
