As camp officially switches over into it’s latter half, we approach a milestone holiday for our nation: 250 years of the United States of America. To honor this occasion, campers were loaded up onto buses and transported downtown to the Southern Kentucky Performing Arts Center where we had previously visited last week for a fantastic local production of the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Prior to finding their seats, campers take care of the necessities: using the bathroom, checking the marquee for upcoming shows, and of course going through the concessions line. Once everyone is settled in, anticipation begins for our program of the evening – the Star Spangled Spectacular. This event is one hosted every year around the timing of our Independence Day to showcase local talent and listen to patriotic tunes. The program for the evening was predominantly settled around the concert’s orchestra band and deep baritone vibrato from the evening’s singer. The song selection included classics like our National Anthem, My Old Kentucky Home, God Bless the USA, and even Les Miserables’s Bring Him Home in honor of our service members. A portion of the evening was dedicated to honoring any present veterans from each of our military service branches as well as hearing directly from two retired army generals as they share their wisened perspectives on what this country means to them. Following our evening of patriotism and entertainment, we corralled students back on to buses where one bus in particular decided to have its own group sing-a-long as we headed back to Florence Schneider Hall to rest and prepare for another fun day on the hill.
