Counselor’s Corner – Crisi Tekemsa

One thing I’ve loved about VAMPY so far is seeing how quickly the students have made this place feel like home. Even though they’re spending their days in challenging classes, they’re making the most of every second outside the classroom too. When classes end, the energy around completely changes. You’ll find students keeping themselves busy by playing sports, board games or just hanging out in the residence halls with friends. Some students have become regulars at the arts and crafts optionals, while others have discovered a competitive side during our evening activities. No matter what they’re doing, they’re always finding ways to have fun together and as a counselor, it is so rewarding to see.

As a counselor, one of my favorite things to watch is the friendships that form. Many students arrive not knowing anyone, and within a few days they’re eating meals together, cheering each other on during games, and laughing about inside jokes that seem like they’ve existed for years. The camaraderie between complete strangers makes this place feel just like home. This was the experience I had as a camper many years ago and it is that behavior that makes kids want to come back each and every year. It’s amazing how quickly a group of students from different places can come together and create such a supportive community.

The students have also brought incredible enthusiasm to our camp-wide events. Whether they’re competing in capture the flag, or showing off their talents in karaoke they give everything their all. Their creativity, curiosity, and willingness to get involved make every day exciting. VAMPY is known for its academics, but it’s the friendships, memories, and community being built outside the classroom that make this experience so special. Watching students grow more confident and connected each day has been one of the most rewarding parts of being a counselor this summer.
