Counselor’s Corner – Jackson Powers

Preston Center Fun

Most nights, SCATS campers have community time, where they can float around Florence Schneider Hall with tons of fun things to do. However, Friday nights present a special opportunity: the Preston Center. Though we shared the Preston Center with other campers who are also enjoying the beautiful WKU campus this summer, SCATS campers were able to use the hardwood courts, the lobby, the track, and the outside lawn. On the hardwood courts, campers played volleyball, pickleball, and basketball. Some walked the track, enjoying the company of their peers. Outside, they enjoyed the nice weather, as well as things like Soccer. Finally, the lobby held people playing Dungeons and Dragons, making friendship bracelets, and engaging each other in conversation.

After a long week in class, I think it’s helpful to give the campers room in a controlled space to let out all their energy. First, we took them to the Honors college for pizza, dodging some rain to enjoy the air, as well as some desserts. From there, we walked to the Preston Center. According to Lowell Marcum, his favorite moment of the night was when “Killian dunked on Jackson,” which I must point out is a lie. Henry Shafer enjoyed learning how to play racquetball for the first time and getting onto the volleyball court. Maddox Aiello enjoyed playing Werewolf with Counselor Megan. Kennedy Scott enjoyed a relaxing evening enjoying the nice weather outside, saying that she preferred to “do nothing” after having a long, fun-filled week.

Ultimately, our goal is to provide something engaging for every camper, even when in a primarily active place like the Preston Center. Saturday is the time for the Olympics, so look out for photos of all the events!
