Students used their senses as a springboard for poetry writing Friday.Where did the week go?  We have had a fantastic time with this special group of young adults. On Friday, we began the day with the statement, “Good writers are observant.” All of the day’s activities revolved around that premise. The students were given a crime scene to study for a limited amount of time, and then they had to answer questions to see how observant they were. Next, they read a short story and picked out descriptive language the author used. The two Smiley Face Tricks for the day also were used to add detail to writing: hyphenated sentences and hyphenated modifiers.

Later, we went outside and used our six senses (the sixth sense being imagination), to observe our surroundings on WKU’s campus. We used those details to compose a poem to include in the upcoming anthology. As a class, we finished the day in the computer lab. I can’t wait to see what this week brings!
