Spotlight on Optionals: Football

The mercury of the thermometer was high and so was the level of competition on “gridiron” of the Colonnades on Wednesday night. Two teams were pitted in a battle for supremacy and the bragging rights for the night. Both teams were very evenly matched which reflected in the final score and duration of the game.

Lead by counselors, Cameron Black and myself, the game started with Cameron’s team jumping out to a 21-7 lead in the first half which would be overcome in the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was an interesting one to say the least. After carefully mapping out the first play of the fourth quarter, both teams were shocked to find  the Water Warfare optional (led by counselors Austin Lyons and Kyle Ritter) invading the playing field with an army of dozens of campers armed with water balloons and sponges.

The barrage of campers lasted a short time and the game was able to resume. The game was tight throughout the remainder of the second half as it was tied until my team took a 35-28 lead with less than 2:00 left in the game. All hope was not lost for Cameron’s team however as they scored the game tying TD on the last play of regulation to force OT.

Since the game was taking place on the campus of Western Kentucky University, we felt it necessary to contest the overtime using collegiate rules and giving each team an opportunity to win or force additional overtime periods.

In overtime, both teams came out flat and both drives ended in failure to force 2OT. The story was almost identical in the second overtime period as both teams failed to score.

In the third overtime period, my team was able to get back on the offensive and converted a 4th and goal opportunity to take the lead. Cameron’s team would push my team to the limit but their final pass attempt would be spiked into the ground and seal my team’s victory.

“It was a tough game, but everyone had a great time and it was a fantastic experience for all” said Captain Cameron in his postgame interview.

I’d like to thank my team for never losing hope in a victory and for fighting hard on both offense and defense. Both teams played remarkably well, and I’m glad that I got the opportunity to spend some time bonding with our campers on the field of competition. I’d also like to thank fellow counselor Jake Inman for being our timekeeper and facilitator of the game.
