The Humanities class and guest driver Andrew Crawford traveled to Nashville, TN, on June 29th. Their first stop was the Tennessee State Museum where they examined Egyptian artifacts and replicas of King Tut’s treasure. They even saw a real mummy! All enjoyed exploring the beautiful “Art of the Dead.” Their next stop was the Parthenon in Centennial Park. After a picnic lunch by the lake, the students toured the Parthenon. Blessed with an enthusiastic and very knowledgeable guide, the students learned the history of the 42-foot statue of Athena and her temple. From architecture to mythology, their guide shared interesting information — including the inside story of the filming of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightening Thief! For many, the highlight of the day was the visit to Congregation Sherith Israel, an orthodox Jewish synagogue that is over 100 years old. Rabbi Saul shared the history of the Jews, plus he explained many of their laws including Kosher and Sabbath laws. Not only did he explain the symbolism in the evocative stained glass, but he also got out the Torah and read from it. It was a wonderful day!
